Editor: This is Alfred Freddy Krupa’s “Experimental expression in watercolor: toothbrush and plastic pen,” created in 2017. The materials listed are already so intriguing…it's just watercolor, but those *tools*! I get a very ephemeral, dreamlike impression, but somehow also very precise because of all those tight line details. What strikes you most about it? Curator: Ephemeral is spot on! It’s like a half-remembered landscape shimmering through a heat haze. The “toothbrush and plastic pen” element elevates the medium itself to the place of creative provocation, don't you think? Krupa is asking, "What if I treat this tool differently; not for control and finesse, but to get that expressive gesture that might surprise me?" Do you feel that he actually relinquishes that conventional control? Editor: I think so, especially in the sky. There's an element of chance, or improvisation. Curator: Yes! That energetic freedom suggests a certain kind of zen attitude that allows for unexpected happy accidents! You know, a good reminder for us all to loosen our grips now and then. What would happen if we swapped our usual instruments for something unusual--how might *we* find new visions and possibilities? Editor: That's inspiring! It's like the painting is inviting me to break out of my routine and play a little. Thanks! Curator: Absolutely! And perhaps, recognize the unseen landscapes within and around you every day... That’s something, isn't it?
