Arsen Savadov made this photograph, titled Kokto. I’m curious about the way the earth-toned palette seems to explode into that mushroom cloud. The scene’s been laid, the stage set, and then - BOOM! - disaster hits, or maybe it’s revelation? I can imagine Savadov thinking, ‘How can I create a photo that shows our past, present, and potential future, all at once?’ The figures seem both elegant and forlorn, like survivors of a strange opera, and that mushroom cloud is the discordant note that throws everything into chaos. It’s like Goya's Disasters of War but staged with a surreal, almost playful detachment. It’s interesting how the formal wear contrasts with the decay, the impending doom hanging heavy, suggesting that maybe disaster is not an event, but a constant state. Like the best paintings, the image lingers long after you’ve seen it.
