This study sheet was made by Johan Thomas Lundbye, in which he portrays himself in various moments, using graphite. Notice on the right, a figure stands with an umbrella beneath a lamp. The umbrella, a shield against the elements, is more than mere protection; it's a symbol of refuge, reminiscent of the protective cloaks seen in ancient Roman art. Similarly, we see how, throughout history, light has been used as a symbol of knowledge and guidance. Consider how these motifs recur across cultures, evolving yet retaining core associations. The interplay of light and shadow is not just visual; it evokes a psychological response. In dreams, such symbols can be powerful, engaging viewers on a deep, subconscious level. The umbrella, in particular, has resurfaced and evolved, appearing in varied contexts, from ceremonial parasols signifying power, to its current status as everyday protection from the rain.
