Here's a photograph, taken by A.G.A. van Eelde, of the Koutoubia Mosque in Marrakech. It’s a study in contrasts, a real dance between light and shadow. Look how the light rakes across the courtyard, creating these stark, graphic shapes. It's like the whole scene is built from a collage of tones. The tower looms, solid and textured, while the surrounding walls stretch out, punctuated by dark archways. What I find fascinating is how the artist uses these deep shadows not just to define form, but to evoke a mood. There's a stillness, a sense of quiet contemplation, that pervades the image. It reminds me of the architectural photographs of Eugène Atget, who also had this knack for capturing the soul of a place through its structures. Both artists knew how to use light and shadow to turn a simple scene into something deeply atmospheric.
