Israel Silvestre created this print, "Huis omringd door gracht en muren met wachttorens," sometime in the 17th century. Silvestre was a draughtsman and printmaker, known for his delicate and detailed depictions of landscapes, architecture, and celebrations. This etching provides a glimpse into the spatial and social hierarchies of the time. The house, fortified with a moat and watchtowers, embodies the power and privilege of its inhabitants. But look closer, and you will see figures crossing a small bridge. Their inclusion brings a human element to the scene. The landscape is highly constructed and speaks to a desire to dominate and control nature, mirroring the social structures of the time, where power was concentrated in the hands of a few. What does it mean to create such a carefully constructed image of safety and status?
