Reinier Nooms, also known as Zeeman, was a Dutch artist who is known for his detailed etchings of landscapes. "A Water Mill near St. Denis" is a great example of Zeeman's work. Created sometime between 1635 and 1668, the etching depicts a water mill, the source of its power, and the surrounding countryside. The scene is dominated by a large stone structure, a millhouse, and the winding waterway that powered it. Zeeman's meticulous technique and detailed rendering of the architecture, flora, and fauna make the viewer feel as if they are right there on the banks of this tranquil Dutch river. This etching is currently housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
