Janos Mattis-Teutsch made this painting called "Composition" with oil on canvas, and what strikes me is the way it is an artwork that feels both resolved and open-ended. The paint is applied in these decisive, almost brutal marks, and there is something about the immediacy and directness of the application that seems to reflect an intuitive understanding of the process. Look at that black line that cuts through the center, it doesn't so much define an edge, as open up a kind of portal into the unknown! The texture is raw, the colors are vibrant and clash in a Fauvist kind of way. This painting reminds me a little of Hilma af Klint, particularly in its use of color and form to express something that's beyond the visible world. The great thing is, art doesn't always have to make sense, sometimes it can just be a feeling.
