Frédéric Boissonnas' photograph, Fort Bouzi bij Nauplion, shows a structure on the water, somewhere in Greece. It looks like he's captured a moment, with the light diffused, and the scene has a hazy quality. I'm thinking about the physicality of taking the photograph. There must have been so many technical considerations around setting up the shot and getting the exposure right. I wonder if he waited for a certain quality of light to create a feeling of calm or mystery? And he might be thinking about how this scene will speak to the viewer. What does he want them to feel or think? It makes me wonder if he would have ever thought someone like me, a painter from Brooklyn, would be talking about it now! When I look at art, I feel like I am in dialogue with other artists through time. Boissonnas' photograph is a reminder that all artists are connected. We're all trying to make sense of the world and communicate our experiences. And we build on each other's ideas, inspiring new ways of seeing and thinking.
