This photograph titled 'Fort Bouzi bij Nauplion' was taken by Frédéric Boissonnas, and it’s a bit like stepping into a memory, isn't it? Look at the surface of the water; see how Boissonnas coaxes so much texture out of those dark grey tones? Each little peak feels almost sculptural, like tiny, fleeting mountains in the sea. I find myself wondering what kind of paper this was printed on, and how the texture of the paper itself adds to the feeling that I could run my hands over the surface of the water. It reminds me a little of the seascapes by Gustave Courbet; both artists share this ability to find something monumental in the everyday, and to imbue the physical world with a kind of emotional weather. With Boissonnas's photo, I keep thinking about art as a conversation across time. It’s less about fixed answers and more about continually asking new questions.
