La Bonne Mere 1750 - 1792

Nicolas de Launay created "La Bonne Mere", or "The Good Mother", using engraving techniques on a sheet of paper. The composition, framed within an oval, focuses on a scene where a mother and her children are set amongst abundant foliage. The artist has used a range of engraving marks that work to define form through light and shadow. Line and texture here produce an incredible amount of depth. We might read this piece as a study in semiotics, where each element invites symbolic interpretation.
