Curatorial notes

Consolida ajacis (have-ridderspore) is a botanical drawing by Hans Simon Holtzbecker, created sometime between 1610 and 1671. Holtzbecker was working in a period marked by significant developments in natural science, as well as the growth of colonialism and global trade. The detailed rendering of the larkspur in watercolor reflects a growing interest in the natural world, fueled in part by explorations and exchanges between cultures. Yet these depictions are never neutral. Botanical art played a role in cataloging and often exploiting natural resources. These representations also carried social implications, reflecting the wealth and power of those who commissioned such works. The delicate colors and precise lines of Holtzbecker's drawing invite a sense of wonder. But they also remind us to consider the complex histories through which our understanding and appreciation of the natural world are shaped. It is both a celebration of nature's beauty and a reminder of the social forces that frame our perception.
