This unassuming watercolor, called "Hoe," was made by George File at an unknown date. I love the way File's captured a simple tool with so much attention; the muted palette of browns and grays really brings out the texture. The image is all about the physical presence of the hoe. The artist uses thin washes to create a sense of depth, and you can almost feel the weight of the metal head and the rough texture of the wooden handle. See how the brushstrokes follow the form of the tool, emphasizing its shape and volume? This is clearly someone who understands the form. File's meticulous approach reminds me of the still-life paintings of Giorgio Morandi, who also found endless fascination in everyday objects. It’s as if File wants us to slow down and really appreciate the beauty and functionality of this humble tool. File shows us that everything can be beautiful and worthy of attention.
