Eyvind Earle made this painting, "Before the sun goes down," with acrylic. What a trip! It feels like being in a dream, right? I imagine Earle standing there, brush in hand, mixing these bold colours. I wonder what he was thinking as he blended that dark blue with the light green to create a super vibrant contrast? Was he thinking of Rothko? The application of the paint is so flat, it almost feels like a print. And check out that foreground, the way he uses all those different shades of blues and greens to make the landscape come alive! I like how he captures the feeling of nature with such graphic precision. The way he made this, it’s as if he was creating his own little world. It reminds you that painters are constantly riffing off each other, building on what came before, transforming the visual language.
