Here's "Nocturne," made by Eyvind Earle, a seriously interesting artist, and it looks like it's been built up with layers, a very thin application, that creates dark, fantastical imagery. I imagine Earle must have been deeply in love with fairytales or the natural world. He must have been thinking about creating a sense of magic, a twilight world where everything is just a little bit off-kilter. I love that glow behind the trees, it feels like a portal or something. The dark colors make the green pop even more, don't they? It reminds me a little bit of Arthur Dove, if he had a gothic phase. The way Earle uses pattern to suggest texture, like the tiny dots in the trees, makes it feel so alive, like everything is breathing and shimmering. It's kind of a conversation across time and styles, all these artists talking to each other through their work, inspiring each other, and giving us new ways to see the world.
