Louis Adolphe Jacobs created this etching titled ‘Landscape with Farmhouse'. Jacobs produced this work at a time when the Netherlands was undergoing significant transformation, with industrialization and urbanization reshaping its social and physical landscapes. "Landschap met boerderij" can be read as a reflection of this changing world. The lone farmhouse and barren trees evoke feelings of loneliness and isolation. In the late 19th century, the representation of rural life often served as a way to express cultural identity and nostalgia for a simpler past. It invites us to consider the relationship between humans and nature, as well as the impact of societal progress on traditional ways of life. Jacobs captures a sense of melancholy, which perhaps invites us to reflect on what is lost and what remains.
