Thorvald Niss made this etching, entitled *Skovrydning. Aften*, which translates as *Deforestation. Evening*, at an unknown date. The image depicts the environmental impact of deforestation. It’s set in Denmark, and it's likely that Niss was commenting on the changes to the landscape being wrought by the industrial revolution. We can see the silhouettes of trees, and a single figure who seems to be surveying the scene. Niss used the graphic arts to give visual form to a growing environmental consciousness across Europe. The Museum holds information that can help us to understand the social and cultural context of artworks, and it preserves them for future generations.
