A. Fesca created this landscape with a tree on the waterfront, using etching and possibly other techniques. The scene reflects the Dutch countryside, a subject often depicted during a time when national identity was closely tied to the land. Notice how the landscape is rendered, complete with figures, and a distant church steeple that evokes a sense of idealized rural life. But, what does it really mean to idealize the rural? Consider who had access to this life, and who may have been excluded or exploited in order to maintain this vision. Landscape art often carries undertones of social class and power dynamics, reflecting an era of significant social change. These landscapes can become a space for cultural commentary. As you observe the landscape, ask yourself what stories are being told. What silences exist within its depiction?
