G.V. Blom made this church interior, sometime between 1853 and 1942, with some kind of graphic implement, maybe graphite, maybe charcoal. I'm really drawn to how the artist uses line and value to create this very still, quiet sense of space. You can feel the coolness of the stone! The texture is built up from these tiny, precise marks, almost like the touch of the artist's hand is trying to replicate the very structure of the building. I keep zooming into the columns and arches, the pews. Look at the way the light hits the pillars—it's so precise, but also suggestive. I think of Piranesi’s etchings, these slightly mad, obsessive architectural drawings that, in their repetition, manage to create something fantastical. Ultimately, it's like Blom isn’t just showing us a place; he’s letting us feel it, and maybe even reflect on what it means to be inside it. It is amazing how a few well placed lines can do that!
