George File created this image of a Toy Bank Bird with indeterminate materials at an indeterminate time. The muted palette and delicate linework give it a humble quality, but a sense of purpose as well. What strikes me is the way the artist renders texture. Notice the feathery quality of the bird’s wings, achieved through fine, repetitive strokes. You can almost feel the smoothness of the metal, but also the patina of age. The surface isn’t slick or concealed, but lets you in on its making. Look closer, and you’ll see the small bear figure on the base. It's not perfectly rendered, but this only adds to its charm, its realness. This image reminds me of the work of Joseph Yoakum, another artist who found beauty in the everyday, rendering his world with an honest eye and a steady hand. Art isn’t about perfection, but about seeing and feeling, and then sharing that vision with others.
