Harrie Gerritz made this 'Compositie met driehoek' using some kind of printmaking technique, and what strikes me first is the way the colours and shapes lock together. It's a reminder that artmaking is always a process of finding connections. The texture is amazing, isn't it? Look at how the layers build up, giving a real sense of depth. The physicality of the medium is so present, especially in the way the red outline vibrates against the pink triangle, it makes you want to reach out and touch it. My eyes are drawn to the cloud-like form at the top of the picture, it feels like a key to the whole piece. It's both solid and ethereal, like a thought taking shape. Gerritz reminds me a little of Alfred Manessier, another artist who found beauty in simplicity. Ultimately, it's the ambiguity that makes this piece so compelling. It invites us to bring our own experiences and interpretations to the table, which is what art is all about.
