This medal, commemorating the 1853 Exhibition of Building Materials in Amsterdam, is replete with symbols that speak to the era's aspirations. Note the crown at the top, and the wreath encircling the text on the other side. Crowns symbolize authority and legitimacy, evoking the pomp of royalty. The wreath, a classical motif, traditionally represents victory, honor, and civic virtue, and has been a symbolic motif since ancient Greece. Here, the wreath implies that progress in industry and craftsmanship is a triumph for the Netherlands, weaving together classical ideals with contemporary achievement. We can also compare it to the use of laurel wreaths in Ancient Rome, or even Renaissance paintings. The collective memory and subconscious processes affect the production and interpretation of motifs; a symbol of peace and accomplishment. Such symbols resonate with a deep emotional power, engaging us on a subconscious level with the themes of progress and national pride. Like the serpent that bites its own tail, it resurfaces, evolves, and takes on new meanings in different historical contexts.
