Alessandro Turchi's "Venus and Cupid" (c. 1630) depicts the Roman goddess of love reclining on a plush velvet cushion. Venus's gaze is directed towards the viewer, holding a bow and arrow. Cupid, her son, is positioned behind her, hiding his face in his hands, possibly representing the pain of love. The Baroque era, characterized by dramatic compositions and ornate details, is evident in this artwork. The painting is on display at the Art Institute of Chicago, measuring 45 9/16 × 62 1/2 in. (115.8 × 158.8 cm).
