Fernando García Ponce made this painting, Sin Título Cuadríptico, using a restricted palette of blues, grays, black and white. See how the geometric planes seem to be built up through layers, like an architectural structure in progress. It's as though we're catching a glimpse of the painting’s evolution. Up close, you can see the texture – how the paint is applied thickly, almost like stucco. There's a real physicality to the medium, a sense of the artist wrestling with the material. Notice the central white block, how it's not a solid, pure white, but broken up with grays and blues, like a cloud obscuring the sky. I can almost feel the weight of the black mass below, pushing upwards, straining against the lighter hues above. This use of geometric forms to create dynamic tension reminds me a little of Mondrian, but with a rawer, more tactile quality. It’s like he's saying, “Art is a process, not a product.” And that's something I can really get behind.
