This postcard to Philip Zilcken was made by Maria Biermé; postmarked April 15, 1916. I imagine her writing with a sense of purpose, wanting to reach out to Zilcken. It is so interesting to see how handwriting can become a kind of drawing. There’s a kind of impatience to this script. The letters are formed with a consistent pressure, but the speed varies. I can almost see the artist’s hand moving across the card, each stroke a deliberate act of communication. I always think about the writers when I see handwriting. This feels like an intimate conversation between the artist and the receiver, like the script is talking. I see this and think of Cy Twombly and how the mark making of writing has been influential in art. I bet Biermé and Twombly would have been great friends.
