This postcard to Philip Zilcken, probably from around 1916, is made with ink and a very light touch on a small rectangle of card. The off-white paper gives it a muted glow. Look closely, and you'll see layers of texture. The slightly smudged stamp and the handwritten script dance together, creating a choreography of intention and chance. Notice how the address cascades down the card, each line a bit bolder than the last, as if the writer gained confidence with each stroke. It’s like watching a performance where the pen is both the dancer and the choreographer. The whole thing feels immediate, like a snapshot of a moment. I’m reminded of Cy Twombly, who also elevated the gesture of handwriting into high art. But unlike Twombly's grand scale, this postcard whispers its secrets, inviting us to lean in and listen closely. Ultimately, art is about seeing what others might overlook and finding beauty in the everyday.
