Herman de Vries created “V 74 -26” using what seems like very precise, maybe even methodical marks. This piece feels to me like a meditation on the idea of process itself. Looking closely, there is a real sense of the artist's hand and body, even though the lines are so regular. I mean, notice how the color shifts slightly from line to line – a subtle dance between blues, grays, and maybe even the faintest hint of green. It’s not just about making a straight line, but about the variations that creep in despite the intention, a bit like life. Each line is a journey, a record of a singular moment in time. It puts me in mind of Sol LeWitt's wall drawings, in that it reduces art to its most essential components, and it finds beauty in simple repetition. It makes me wonder what the artist was thinking about when he was making it. For me, the beauty is in not knowing, but feeling.
