Harrie Gerritz made "In de schaduw," or "In the Shadow," using etching. The lines are so delicate, like a memory trying to hold its shape. Look at how Gerritz uses the etched line to define the cow. It’s not about volume or mass, but about capturing the essence of "cow-ness" in the simplest terms. The shadow under the tree becomes a stage, and the cows are like actors waiting for their cue. The application of the etching medium isn't showy or expressive; it's matter-of-fact. The touches of ochre in the leaves overhead bring the whole piece to life, suggesting an interest in capturing the subtle effects of light. I am put in mind of Giorgio Morandi, who used a similar approach in his still life paintings, focusing on humble subjects.
