Editor: Here we have Eugène Isabey’s sketch, “Boat.” It’s rendered in graphite, and I find it quite somber. How do you interpret this scene? Curator: I see a powerful comment on the exploitation of natural resources. The abandoned boat speaks to the consequences of unsustainable practices and the impact on coastal communities, wouldn't you say? Editor: That's a very different take than I had! I was focused on the boat itself. Curator: It makes you think about whose labor built it and what stories it could tell about trade and cultural exchange. Editor: I hadn't considered the human element, but that definitely adds another layer. Curator: Exactly, and isn't that the point of art, to make us question?
