Adrianus Eversen created this drawing of a rowboat with goods using graphite on paper. The composition is dominated by the horizontal form of the boat, its parallel lines creating a sense of stability. Eversen's use of line is particularly striking. He employs hatching to create tonal variations, adding depth and volume to the barrel and sacks within the boat. This technique, reminiscent of traditional printmaking, suggests an interest in the graphic qualities of the medium. The artist disrupts the linear stability with the post at the left, breaking up the formal flow. Eversen's choice to leave much of the paper untouched draws our attention to the materiality of the drawing itself. In its simplicity, the drawing invites us to consider the basic elements of representation and how they function within a larger discourse of artistic expression. The marks on the page create a space for ongoing interpretation and re-interpretation.
