Giuseppe Incorpora captured this view of Palermo from Monte Pellegrino with photography, a relatively new medium at the time. Dominating the landscape, we see an obelisk standing as a silent witness, a symbol deeply rooted in ancient Egyptian culture. Its form, reaching towards the heavens, represents not only power and authority, but also a connection between the earthly and the divine. The obelisk reappears throughout history, adapted by the Romans, and later finding its place in European cityscapes during the Renaissance and Baroque periods. In each context, the obelisk retained its symbolic essence while accumulating new layers of meaning. It’s fascinating to consider how this ancient symbol, born from the collective consciousness of one civilization, continues to resonate across time and cultures.
