Editor: Here we have a pencil drawing of trees by Joshua Cristall, but its title and date are unknown. It's quite a small, intimate work. What symbols or deeper meanings do you see here? Curator: This quick sketch evokes the enduring human connection with nature. The trees, rendered with delicate lines, speak to resilience and growth. Notice how the artist contrasts the varying densities of foliage. What emotional response does that evoke in you? Editor: It makes me think about the different stages of life and how they coexist. Curator: Exactly. The landscape becomes a mirror reflecting our own internal landscapes and the cycles of existence. It's a potent reminder of nature's enduring presence. Editor: That gives me a lot to think about. Thanks!

This drawing may have been prepared as an instruction piece to illustrate three stages in the creation of a drawing. On the left is the initial outline of a tree, in the centre is a partially shaded tree, and on the right is a fully shaded example. The final image shows how the graphite is built up to give a rich textural effect. Gallery label, August 2004
