Editor: So, this small sketch by Joshua Cristall, made with graphite, has a rather dreamlike quality, don't you think? It feels fleeting. What draws your eye in this piece? Curator: Fleeting is spot on. It feels like Cristall was trying to capture a memory. The looseness of the graphite almost vibrates. Notice how the forms aren't really defined. It asks us, the viewers, to complete the picture. To feel our own way into the landscape. It’s like a whisper of a place, what do you think of that? Editor: I like that, a whisper of a place. It really does put the onus on us to engage with it. Curator: Exactly! It invites our imagination to wander, to piece together the scene. It's the art of suggestion, wouldn't you agree? Something so simple, yet so evocative. Editor: I do. I’ll definitely look at sketches differently from now on.
