Here we have Robert Frank’s ‘Convention 7’, a black and white photograph. More specifically, a contact sheet. What strikes me about a contact sheet is its inherent process. It’s not a single precious image, but a record of many images, an array of near-misses and possible hits. Each frame offers a slightly different angle, a shift in focus, a variation in light. Our eyes dance across the surface, noticing the grainy texture, the subtle gradations of tone. My attention is drawn to the sequence on the lower left. A sea of faces, some blurred, some sharp. The crowd merges, their individual features lost in the collective mass. The light feels almost violent, stark and contrasty. It's a raw, unfiltered glimpse into a moment. Frank's work echoes that of Garry Winogrand, another street photographer, similarly embracing the spontaneous, the imperfect, the messy reality of life. These photographers remind us that art isn't about perfection. It’s about embracing the unpredictable nature of the moment.
