In April 1923, Hendrik Herman van den Berg captured two photographs of the Van den Berg family during a walk. The images are small, but you can see the family pausing during their stroll; in one they’re resting on the ground and in the other, perched in a tree. You can almost feel the cool air, smell the earth, and hear the rustling leaves. I wonder what Van den Berg was thinking as he framed these shots. Was he trying to capture a sense of timelessness, a fleeting moment of connection between family and nature? Or perhaps he was simply documenting a pleasant afternoon outing. It reminds me of when my family went on walks. Snapping these photos might have felt like pressing ‘pause’ on life for a moment and saying, ‘this is it’.
