This photograph, Leprozenkolonie Danaradja: personen te paard en oogst, was created by an anonymous artist, and the date of its creation is unknown. What's striking about the image is the way the sepia tones flatten the landscape. They also flatten the human figures and working animals, all these elements are bleached into a harmonious field of creams and browns. Focusing on the central image, it shows figures tending oxen in a field. You can almost feel the humidity through the density of the foliage. The images which flank the central image show figures on horseback. I love how these images are placed at diagonals, as if they are falling off the edge of the world. The piece reminds me of work by Gerhard Richter, where he's using photography as a source material. Richter is interested in how the photograph as an object flattens lived experience, so perhaps this work is exploring similar ideas. What do you think?
