Conrad Marca-Relli made this collage painting with oil on canvas, calling it F-S-6-59. Right away I see a playful approach, using paint and collage to make something that feels both planned and totally spontaneous. Look closely, and you can see how the texture of the canvas peeks through some of the more transparent layers of paint. There's a tension between the flatness of the surface and the illusion of depth created by overlapping shapes. I’m drawn to the collage elements which appear to be painted separately and then pasted onto the canvas, adding a layer of physicality to the work. Check out the way he's used contrasting colors and shapes to create a sense of movement and energy. It's as if the painting is constantly shifting and changing right before your eyes. This work reminds me a little bit of Robert Motherwell’s collages, particularly in the way it combines abstraction with a sense of raw emotion. But Marca-Relli brings his own unique sensibility to the mix, creating a work that's both challenging and deeply satisfying.
