This Dove is a sculpture, and it looks like it was made with clear cast acrylic, which can be cut, and engraved. I wonder what it was like for Abraham Palatnik to make this? In some ways it’s very modernist and minimal. It’s not folk art, but has some of that spirit in it, even though it’s hard to place. He must have been thinking about the idea of flight, and lightness. He really commits to these simple black lines, and then adds these circles in the tail. You can see Palatnik playing with Op Art here. I have no idea what Palatnik was thinking about when he made this sculpture, but I bet he was inspired by the art of his time. Artists are always talking to each other, even across time, across generations, and it’s so fascinating to see the conversation unfold.
