Sergey Piskunov made ‘Mona Lisa Mouse’ in oil on canvas, and you know, I can really imagine him at work in the studio. I'm picturing Piskunov wrestling with form. I imagine he started with that mouse shape, that ubiquitous symbol of entertainment, building it up in a series of faceted planes. Then he’s layering it with fragments of the Mona Lisa. It’s as if he’s trapped the Renaissance icon in a funhouse mirror. You can see him balancing flatness with depth, representation with abstraction. It's kind of like he's asking, "How much can I distort an image before it loses its meaning?" Maybe he was thinking about other masters playing with similar themes, like Picasso’s cubism and its faceting of form. Ultimately, Piskunov offers a really playful take on appropriation. And it makes you wonder about originality, authorship, and how images circulate in culture. It’s a conversation between artists across time, each riffing on the other's ideas.
