This small untitled drawing was made by Gregory Montreuil, using ink on paper. The approach here feels loose and intuitive, a real embrace of the unexpected. The paper is almost entirely blank, except for a square area in the center where the artist has worked. What I find interesting is how the umber colored ink creates these dense areas, pooling and gathering to form shapes that are almost floral, or perhaps microscopic. But from these darker nodes emanate these impossibly thin lines, like hairs, which disperse and radiate outwards. Look at how these lines occasionally intersect, creating fleeting connections before dissolving into nothingness. I wonder whether it’s a coincidence that this evokes the feeling of circuitry or neurons firing? It makes me think of Hilma af Klint and her occult drawings, but also Agnes Martin and her use of line. Art is such an ongoing conversation, isn’t it?
