Curatorial notes
This drawing by Bartolomeo Crivellari depicts a standing man in a niche with his elbow resting on a column. The pose of the figure is particularly striking. Notice how his head rests wearily on his hand, a gesture laden with melancholy and contemplation. This motif of the pensive figure, or what we might call 'melancholia,' echoes across centuries, from ancient depictions of philosophers to Renaissance portrayals of prophets and saints. Consider, for instance, Michelangelo’s figures in the Medici Chapel, where similar postures convey deep introspection and sorrow. This gesture transcends mere representation; it becomes a vessel for expressing profound emotional states, engaging us on a visceral level. It resurfaces and evolves in different contexts, taking on new meanings but always carrying the weight of human introspection.
