This delicate photo of the Sioule valley in Auvergne, was taken by Delizy sometime in the 19th century. It's small, intimate, and almost whispers to you. Looking at this, I imagine Delizy, probably with a large format camera and tripod lugging it around, trying to find the right spot, the right light. I imagine a photographer battling with the landscape. What did they see in this place? It reminds me of a Corot landscape, all soft edges, subtle tonal variations, and a kind of serene, quiet observation. There’s a gentle haze over everything, softening the details, making it feel like a memory. The landscape itself is inviting, and the textures and tones are so soft and inviting. It is a reminder that artists, regardless of their medium, are always in conversation with each other, seeing the world through each other's eyes, and adding their own unique perspective.
