This photograph of a landscape with buildings, likely in Sumatra, was taken by Christiaan Benjamin Nieuwenhuis. The image is built from a monochrome palette, various shades of grey, which is typical of early photography. Look closely, and you'll notice the texture is soft. It gives the image a dreamy, almost painterly quality, like an impressionist landscape. The way the light filters through the trees, creating a dappled effect, reminds me of Corot. My eye is drawn to the sharp focus of the trees in the foreground. This creates a contrast with the misty background. It’s as if Nieuwenhuis is playing with depth, inviting us to get lost in the details while still appreciating the overall scene. Like artmaking itself, photography is a process of selection, and this piece feels like a distillation of the artists experience.
