P.C. Skovgaard made this drawing titled "Forskellige figurer bl.a. karikatur af en advokat" with pencil, sometime between 1817 and 1875. During Skovgaard’s lifetime, Denmark experienced significant social and political changes, including the rise of a liberal bourgeoisie. This sketch seems to capture that emerging class of professionals. It is a caricature of an attorney, a figure from the bourgeois class, with his gaze directed upwards as though contemplating his next case. Skovgaard's choice to portray the attorney in a caricatured form might be a reflection of the ambivalence towards this new class. While attorneys represent justice and order, caricatures often reveal underlying tensions or critiques of power. The surrounding figures, faded and less defined, might symbolize the changing social landscape. There's a sense of observation and mild mockery, inviting us to reflect on the evolving roles and perceptions of professions in a changing society.
