Henk Henriët made this drawing, 'Standing Man and Various Faces,' with a graphite pencil. Look at these scribbled marks! I see Henriët trying to figure something out. Maybe he's rehearsing an idea, letting his hand move freely to explore different characters and expressions. The standing man on the left – is he about to give a speech? Or maybe he's just gesturing wildly in conversation? I love how the faces seem to float around him, each with its own quirky personality. Henriët is probably thinking about Rembrandt and those other Dutch masters who were so good at capturing human emotions. It's like he's channeling their spirit, but with a looser, more modern sensibility. It makes me want to grab a pencil and start sketching myself, see what kind of characters I can conjure up from the depths of my imagination. It's all one big conversation, isn’t it?
