Here is a stack of paper sheets, made by Felix Gonzalez-Torres. On its top, two adjacent circles suggest a union, a coming together that echoes the eternal bond seen in intertwined figures throughout history. Circles, throughout time, have appeared in countless forms – from halos in religious iconography symbolizing divinity to wedding rings signifying eternal love. The two circles here evoke a sense of completion and unity, mirroring the double portraits of Renaissance art, where couples were immortalized side by side. But here, there is no paint on canvas, but impermanent paper. The act of taking a sheet transforms the artwork, mirroring the slow disappearance of a loved one, the fading of memory. Yet, each sheet taken is not a loss, but a continuation – a piece of the whole carried into the world, just as love persists beyond presence, forever imprinted in our collective memory. The cycle continues.
