This 15-meter roll of cream-colored gauze by Gustav Schnitzler sits here like a poem waiting to happen. I can’t help but think about what Schnitzler was thinking when he created this piece. Imagine the artist carefully winding and layering the gauze, each turn adding to the sculpture's form. You can almost see the texture, soft and yielding, yet holding a shape that speaks to containment and potential. I’m really struck by the translucence of the material, and how the light must have filtered through it. It reminds me that art isn't always about bold statements, sometimes it's about the quiet beauty of everyday materials, transformed by intention. Think of Eva Hesse and her use of latex tubing – a similar interest in the poetics of the ordinary. Artists are always talking to each other, you know, across time and space. This piece invites us to see the potential for beauty and meaning in the simplest of things.
