This is a seal stamp, made of wood and metal, by Theo Nieuwenhuis. Though undated, it reflects the artist’s work during the Dutch Art Nouveau movement. Seals like this were functional objects, used to authenticate documents with a personal emblem. Here, we see stylized carving on the wooden handle. Notice the integration of organic motifs, typical of the Art Nouveau style, and the metallic stamp itself, which bears what seems to be a family crest or personal monogram. In the Netherlands, around the turn of the 20th century, Art Nouveau designers sought to elevate craft and design, integrating art into everyday life and challenging the division between fine and applied arts. This particular piece reflects the cultural values placed on craftsmanship, individuality, and the aesthetic integration of form and function. Understanding its place in social history requires us to research the artist, the cultural movement, and the specific context in which such objects were used and valued. Only then can we appreciate its significance beyond its mere function.
