Nicolas Toussaint Charlet created this print, "Three Soldiers Drinking and Telling Stories at a Tavern," in the 19th century, a period of significant social and political upheaval in France. Charlet, deeply affected by his father's service in Napoleon's army, often depicted military life, not with grandiosity, but with a focus on the everyday experiences of soldiers. Here, we see a scene of camaraderie. There is something about the way they are leaning in that suggests shared experience. However, the presence of the young boy, perhaps an orphan or a child laborer, carrying what looks like a jug of drink serves as a stark reminder of the broader societal costs of war. The discarded crutches and a military cap on the ground suggest loss and hardship, inviting reflection on the human cost of military conflict. Charlet's work invites us to consider who benefits from the theater of war, and who pays the ultimate price.
