Wayne Branum made this "Triangular Container" with clay. Immediately, you're drawn to the verticality of the piece, emphasized by warm hues ranging from pale yellow to deep terracotta. Branum’s method plays with the nature of clay: its ability to be both molded and marked. The slightly irregular lines, like traces of a fingerprint, add a distinctly human element, softening what could have been an industrial or severe form. This work can be viewed through a semiotic lens, with color and texture acting as signs. For example, the varying intensities in color can signify time, like the gradual aging of earthen materials. Consider how the container challenges notions of stability. The slight tilt of the white stripes disrupt our expectations of rigid geometry. Branum encourages us to view the piece not just as a vessel, but as a dynamic interplay between intention and accident, between structure and chance.
