Muirhead Bone made this etching of Mrs. Gutbier, in a Hat, on a metal plate, and what's cool is the way he’s really just letting the lines do the work. Look at the cross-hatching that makes up the darks of her dress and that amazing, feathery hat! It’s all about building up tone with these tiny, etched marks. And the way he leaves the background almost untouched gives it this airy, unfinished vibe. It’s like he’s saying, "Here’s the essence, the rest is up to you." It reminds me of Cy Twombly, in that it embraces the beauty of the incomplete. Instead of trying to capture every detail, Bone gives us just enough to spark our imagination. It’s a reminder that art isn’t about perfection.
