Goodwin & Company produced "Snapper" Garrison, Jockey as part of a series of cigarette cards. The lithograph is striking for its calculated arrangement of elements, despite its small scale. Note how the subject, a portrait of the jockey, is framed within symbolic motifs. A horseshoe, and a laurel, which would have been understood at the time as signs of good luck and victory. These elements create a visual hierarchy. The composition is also interesting in how it balances the real with the ideal. The jockey's rendered likeness, complete with mustache and racing cap, contrasts with the stylized symbols surrounding him. The jockey’s orange and maroon garments and cap, set against the bright backdrop, create a striking contrast and draw the eye. The text at the bottom, “Old Judge & Gypsy Queen Cigarettes,” anchors the image in its commercial context. These cards functioned as both art and advertisement, revealing a complex relationship between representation, commerce, and cultural values.
