Peter Aubry’s "Letter T" presents us with an elaborate, ornamental design, meticulously rendered in ink on paper. The letterform is not merely a structural element but a field of baroque invention. The composition is dominated by the grandiose letter 'T', bedecked with curling tendrils and grotesque masks. The density of line work creates a textured surface that invites the eye to wander, losing itself in the detail. Two human faces, seemingly disembodied, flank the central vertical stem, adding a surreal touch to the otherwise decorative piece. Aubry is playing with ideas of form and function. The letter, typically a signifier of language, is here elevated to a purely aesthetic object. It is a flamboyant display of skill, but also a reflection on the nature of signs themselves, their capacity to be divorced from their original purpose. The "Letter T" becomes a site of visual pleasure, where meaning is secondary to the sheer exuberance of form.
